What is it

Specialize in sleep medicine, with international projection

Sleep medicine has gone from being an area of some interest to becoming amature discipline, with solid scientific foundations. Given the high prevalence of sleep disorders, mastering them is key to completing the training of doctors, nurses, psychologists, dentists, biologists and other professionals.

No specialty is dedicated exclusively to sleep medicine or "somnology", so those who dedicate themselves to it need acomplementary and multidisciplinary training. That is the purpose of our master's degree: to offer solid and updated theoretical-practical knowledge, and to prepare—whoever wants it—for theESRS exam.

Objectives and who it is aimed at

The purpose of the master's degree is to offer theoretical-practical knowledgesolid and updatedon sleep medicine, which trains for the practice of this discipline and prepares for the European exam of theESRS(European Sleep Research Society) —also useful for the Spanish FESMES exam.

Addressed todoctors, nurses, psychologists, dentists, biologists and other health sciences professionals. Being 100% online, you will not have to paralyze your career while you train.

Module I · Normsleep: physiology, clinical evaluation and complementary tests

  • Physiology of sleep:regulatory mechanisms, chronobiology and circadian rhythms, biological functions of sleep, sleep and age, hygiene of sleep, effects of acute and chronic deprivation, and effects of drugs on sleep.
  • Evaluation of disorders:classification, clinical interview and clinical examination.
  • Complementary tests:polysomnography, respiratory polygraphy, actigraphy, multiple latency test, maintenance of wakefulness test, suggested immobilization test, other scales and biomarkers of sleep.

Module II · Pathology of sleep: classification, pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment

  • Insomnia.
  • Respiratory disorders during sleep.
  • Hypersomnias of central origin.
  • Circadian rhythm disorders.
  • Behavioral disorders during sleep (parasomnias and epilepsy).
  • Movement disorders during sleep.

Credits, evaluation and practices
  • 48 ECTS· syllabus and theoretical classes.
  • 6 ECTS· Master's Final Project, after completing the syllabus (≈2 months).

Any person (Spanish or foreign) can accessuniversity graduate, preferably in the area of health sciences.

Internships and European title

The master's degree covers100% of theoretical contentof the ESRS exam. For himeuropean title it is also required to accredit internships for one year in a recognized sleep unit, available at the IIS centers (Madrid, Santiago de Chile or Panama) for €300/month.
